Chapter 5- Basic Soap Making - Melt and Pour Process Outlined
Melt and pour soap making remains the easiest and safest method to creating a bar of your own. What greater way is there to show your loved ones that you care than presenting them with a homemade gift? Who doesn't use soap? You can even personalize it to the specific person receiving it. The possibilities are endless. These bars also make excellent party favors. The soap base is mostly glycerin and not lye. It's natural, so you won't have to worry about chemical burns. With close supervision, children can even participate in this rewarding hobby.
Required Materials
Soap base, opaque, or clear
This can be easily purchased at a craft store or online. You have to use a soap base. Other soaps will not melt.
Microwave
Although the same could be accomplished with a double boiler, microwaving is simple.
A microwave-safe container
I prefer to use my Pyrex measuring cup because the spout. The spout allows for spill-free pouring. Any microwave safe bowl will do. Kitchenware can be used. All materials used are safe and can be washed off without struggle.
A stirring utensil such as a spoon or dowel
A clean cutting surface
Whether you use a cutting board or your counter top make sure that the surface is clean. No one wants dirt, dust, chemicals, or unwanted food particles contaminating their soap.
Molds
Any flexible container can be used as a mold. This may be the time to re-purpose empty food containers such as plastic egg cartons and cream cheese containers. Novelty shaped ice cube trays make for interesting shapes. Stay clear of glass and aluminum.
Plastic wrap
Because of its glycerin base, your soap's shape will morph if it’s not wrapped in plastic within a few days of creation.
